How much does loft insulation cost?

Are you thinking about having your attic insulated from the inside? Then you are probably wondering what the costs are of complete attic insulation. This title will tell you everything about the price per m2 (square meter) and what you need to know if your attic needs to be insulated. Insulating an attic is the most profitable way to reduce your energy costs. Supposeyou are busy with a complete home renovation and do not protect your attic. You will lose 25% in energy loss by not insulating your attic.

Heat rises; we all know that. But the heat you create by using energy leaves your house through your attic just as quickly. that is a huge shame, but many people do not realize what impact this has on their living comfort and energy bill. For most homes, you have to think of saving hundreds of euros per year and thousands of euros within just a few years. You will quickly earn back the cost of the attic insulation!!!

Insulate the attic floor or insulate your roof?

The first choice you will have to make when insulating your attic on the inside is whether you will protect your roof or have your attic floor insulated. Are you going to use the attic purely as a room to store some things, such as the Christmas decorations used once a year and then put away again? Then floor insulation is a great solution.

Suppose you are renovating your house, and you will also use the attic as a living space. In that case, it is good to make a slightly more significantinvestment to achieve maximum living pleasure and reduce heating costs and temperature differences as much as possible.

Insulate the inside or from the outside?

By insulating the roof, you develop a much better living environment in the attic. The easiest and cheapest way to protect a pitched roof is to use glass or rock wool. When using glass wool or rock wool, the spaces between the beams in the attic are filled with insulation material. That'sdone from the inside of the roof, boarding in the loft. An important aspect is that the insulation material you will use is applied thick enough. The best insulation thickness is 15 to 20 cm.

If you want to insulate your attic from the outside of your roof, the costs will increase considerably. Your entire tiled roof will have to be removed, and your ceiling will be raised mainly to place the insulation plates. Insulating an attic from the outside is often done when the attic space has already been finished and several rooms are used.

Insulate and finish

If the attic insulation has been installed, the attic still needs to be finished. In most cases, this is done with drywall; by matching the surfaces with wood, the plasterboards can be mounted one by one.

When all plasterboards are screwed down, it is time for the plasterer. The plasterer ensures that the entire attic gets a new layer of stucco. In this way, your attic becomes a whole again, and the loft painting can begin.

Insulate attic floor

If you use the attic purely as storage space, it is a shame to invest in insulating both the top and bottom layers. Protecting the floor is the simplest and cheap way to provide the attic of your home with insulation.

By having your attic floor insulated, you will notice enormous savings in energy and your home heating costs.By insulating the home, heat can no longer leave the home. The heat stays nicely inside, and therefore, you need to use less energy to reach and maintain the same pleasant temperature in your home. Also, price is a fundamental reason for making this choice.

The floor of your home largely determines which approach is chosen. How about the construction? With solid concrete, a different approach is, of course, required than with wood.

Insulate attic roof

An attic is a place where the temperature is the least stable. As a result, it is not pleasant to stay in the attic, especially if you also want to sleep or live there. That is why we strongly recommend, in this case, opting for attic roof insulation instead of attic floor insulation. As mentioned earlier, you can combine both ways to maximize your attic's insulation. That may initially require a slightly more significantinvestment, but this will eventually pay for fewer energy costs and more generous living and living pleasure.

The attic of your home will suddenly take on a completely different meaning for you. Where you previously avoided it as much as possible and only used it for some storage, this is no longer necessary. You will discover completely new possibilities to use the space.

Insulate the sloping roof between beams

Mineral wool is the most practical way to provide a pitched roof with insulation. If you choose glass or rock wool to insulate your attic, the spaces between the rafters will be filled.

The material must be applied thick enough to guarantee the insulation effect when insulating. Think of a layer of 15 to 20 centimeters to ensure that the insulation impacts temperature fluctuations and energy costs.

Cost of installing attic insulation

Insulating the attic: The approach to protectingyour attic determines the costs involved. However, you can see insulating your attic as an excellent investment because the 25% you lose in energy now will be a thing of the past. The approach you choose will determine the degree of insulation and the energy savings you will notice.

Cost of insulating the attic floor

You only use the attic as a storage space. You do not need to have the roof insulated and choose attic floor insulation. In that case, you can consider the cost of between 15 and 30pounds per square meter.

Cost of attic insulation roof

To insulate the inside of your roof, you need to dig a little deeper into your pocket. In some cases, you pay only 15 pounds per square meter, but consider a maximum price of 55 pounds per square meter depending on the material and how easy it is to achieve the insulation.

Do not be put off by the costs, and first find out about subsidies and reimbursements. The government attaches great importance to making homes more sustainable and insulated. This can make insulating your home a good investment and a lot less expensive than you might initially think because of the subsidies.

Types of attic insulation material

If you have decided that insulating your attic is a good choice for you, there are several options to make in terms of materials and approach.

Type of insulation material
Average cost
EPS insulation material
Average of £18 pounds  per square meter
PUR insulation material
On average, £22 pounds per square meter.
PIR insulation material
On average, £22 pounds per square meter.
Glass wool insulation material
On average, £7 pounds per square meter.

PIR as an application for roof insulation

PIR is a plastic that has been specially developed for insulation application. It was an unpopular product some time ago because other, better insulating materials overtook it. But that is now a thing of the past.

PIR's new version insulates your attic better than XPS and PUR. It is one of the most effective materials you currently have to protect your attic.

PIR comes in the form of rigid plates. That dramatically benefits the insulation because you need products with a high density. That means it can be used for both your floors and roofs. PIR is also one of the best choices for pitched roofs. Here the PIR plates can be installed under the rafters or through a wooden structure.

When using PIR plates, you should consider 25 pounds per square meter costs.

Tempex (polystyrene foam) for the insulation of your attic

Styrofoam, we all know it. It is often used as a packaging material, but it also has a very high insulation value. Tempex is often used to insulate the floor or as a plate for the roof. It is also called EPS, which stands for expanded polystyrene.

Although styrofoam consists of 98% air, it still has a high insulation value. You need a less thick layer of it than is required, for example, when using glass wool.

Tempex is easy to apply and deform, is moisture resistant, has a long service life, lightweight, andis environmentally friendly. When using Tempex, you have to count on about 8 pounds per square meter.

Rock wool for attic insulation

Rock wool is recommended as the best and most fire-resistant solution for attic insulation. In addition to positive effects on your living comfort and energy costs, it is also sound-insulating, making a huge difference. That saves on noise pollution and creates better acoustics in your home.

If you want to turn your attic into a living environment and even work in it, you can do so very well using stone wool insulation. Rock wool comes in two different forms: slabs and blankets. The blankets are excellent if you have a sloping roof; you can quickly isolate hard-to-reach areas.

Home deal saving tips

Check for maintenance
Before you have your roof insulated, it is wise to check whether your roof needs maintenance. Before starting insulation, moisture problems, wood rot, and leakage are best recognized and remedied. Check the roof construction well and look for any moisture or pests. This way, you avoid a high-cost item if you have to remove the attic insulation again later.

Prevent additional heat loss
Every house has t, and o do with construction nodes or thermal bridges. These are weak links in the action or floor of the house. Cold bridges arise in places where the insulation does not continue because of a construction beam. That causes heat loss because the heat in this place escapes extra quickly. Condensation also forms in these places, leading to mold or wood rot. Therefore, always have your home insulated by a professional who knows how to prevent this heat loss.

View the subsidy options
It is advantageous to insulate your attic with the various insulation subsidies and insulation premiums from the national government and municipalities. In several cases, this involves an amount of up to  £ 625. Ask your city whether they have a scheme and see whether you are eligible for a subsidy.
