Find out about their experience

When it comes to home repairs or renovations, compared to other types of work like electrical or plumbing, installing and updating your flooring is relatively low impact. But that doesn’t mean that it’s an easy job to do. Quite the contrary actually, as the installation of flooring has its own intricacies and other elements that are highly specialized. These are things you want to be certain to keep in mind when you’re meeting with any potential flooring fitters for your home.

Some of the specialists you’ll meet with are hyper focused on one type of flooring only. If it’s the type of flooring you want to install in your home, then you’re on a good path. If it’s not, then you need to be looking at other potential flooring fitters.

No matter who you’re meeting with, you want to ensure that you review pictures or a portfolio of their previous work. Look to see for yourself what the quality of it is. Also, ask to be able to see some of their previous work for customers. A solid flooring fitter will be more than happy to introduce you to some of their past clients.

What are their qualifications?

Flooring, being that it is a specialized type of job for your home makes it important to ascertain the qualifications that any potential flooring fitters have. Ones that you should consider hiring will also belong to these professional organisations:

  • The Contract Flooring Association
  • The National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers
  • The Flooring Industry Training Association
All of these organisations hold their members to a higher standard of work.

Get at least three quotes and ensure that they’re thorough

ClickATrades recommends that you get a minimum of three quotes for a specialized job like flooring in your home. Be certain that they are detailed and lay out the full scope of work that will be done in your home. Once you have at least three quotes, you’ll want to lay them out side by side and look for where discrepancies might be showing up between tradesmen.

Are they responsible for the removal of any demo materials? What materials will they be using for the job? Are they subcontracting out any part of the flooring work needed for your home?

These are all things that you will be able to find on the quote and want to verify ahead of time. You’ll also want to confirm what their policy is on materials. Will they use flooring materials you’ve already purchased or be supplying all of them?

What is the follow up plan for the work to be done?

Flooring can take some time to settle in properly, so it’s important that you arrange for the flooring fitter to come back out to your home a few weeks or so after the job to do a follow up. This will allow time for things to show up that otherwise might upon immediate inspection after the job is completed.

These are a few of the most important things to be looking for when you’re considering hiring a flooring fitter for any flooring work on your home.
