When it comes to construction jobs around your home, there may come a time when it’s not what you’re adding to your home, but rather, what needs to be taken away that counts.

Or you’ve been waiting on that new kitchen remodel but are stuck having to find someone to get rid of everything in your old kitchen. Whatever the case may be, you want to be certain that you’re hiring a demolition and clearance contractor that knows what they’re doing and how to properly remove the old materials on your property.

We spoke with some of the experienced demolition and clearance contractors on ClickATrades to see if we could learn some of the most important things for you to keep in mind when you’re looking for the best tradesman to handle your demolition and clearance needs:

  • Define the payment structure up front.
If you’re keeping these questions and the answers we have below in mind when you’re considering which demolition and clearance contractor to hire for your home, you’ll be on your way to making a great choice.

Be sure to research the feedback they already have.

It doesn’t matter who the tradesman you’re considering for your job is, it’s crucially important to take the time to research their past work before you decide. Here on ClickATrades, there are many highly reviewed demolition and clearance contractors who’s profiles you can review for detailed reviews from previous customers. You’ll also be able to find a collection of photos of their previous work to know exactly how qualified they are as well as the quality of work they do.

Most competent tradesmen will even be more than happy to put you in contact with some of their previous clients so you can speak with them directly about the service they received.

Get quotes from at least three contractors, and do it in person.

When it comes to demolition work, some may just see it as an opportunity to tear things down, but there are many different things you need to know before you take a sledgehammer to an empty wall. For one, the wall may be load bearing, or not even actually empty at all. Whatever the case may be, requesting quotes from at least three demolition and clearance specialists is incredibly important.

You want to have them come out to your home to see the work for themselves. This way they’re able to inspect each aspect of it so, for instance, they can see for themselves if that wall you want to destroy may actually be load baring. They’ll also be able to tell and know where there may be hidden gas lines or water pipes. These things can only properly be deciphered in person.

Once the tradesmen you’re considering have come out to your home, they’ll be able to give you a detailed and thorough quote for the work they’re going to be doing. This quote should include the materials that they’ll be using, how long they estimate the work to take, and what things you will be responsible for outside of their scope of work. You also want to be sure that each quote states whether or not the tradesman you hire will be subcontracting out any of the demolition or clearance work on your home.

Do they have correct and current licensing?

Any tradesman that deals with waste will need to be registered as either a waste carrier, broker, or dealer. Ones who aren’t registered can be fined thousands of pounds. So, it’s important for you to find out ahead of time if the demolition and clearance specialists that you’re considering are registered as a waste carrier, broker, or dealer. This will ensure that your job is done right and effectively.

Also, if the job around your home contains any asbestos, you want to hire only a tradesman who is fully aware of the risks and their ability to dispose of the materials properly and safely.

Define the payment structure up front.

As with any contractor or tradesman that you’re considering hiring, be certain that you’ve laid out before hiring them any payment plan or structure. This way everything is clear for each party before the job even starts.

These are just a few of the things to take into consideration and be aware of when you’re looking for a demolition and clearance contractor for work around your home. You can find more information about these in our tradesmen listings on ClickATrades.
